The Government is proposing that existing mobile masts can be built taller under permitted development rights. This means that telecommunication companies will not need planning permission for increases in height up to a maximum of 25 metres.

Plans are already underway for mobile masts in our area, and the relaxation in permitted development rights will allow for these to be built tallers:

  • At Junction of Church Lane And London Road Sunninghill – 20m mast (see picture)
  • At Junction of Broomhall Lane And London Road Sunningdale – 15m mast
  • Sunningdale Station Car Park London Road Sunningdale – 20m mast
  • Opposite Tinkers Lane Redwood Drive Sunningdale – 15m mast

For new masts, they can be built up to 5m higher, meaning a maximum of 30 metres subject to planning authority prior approval. Taller masts will need planning permission as they do today.

The Government justification is to improve mobile connectivity and to speed up the deployment of fast mobile internet harnessing 5G networks. This technology promises mobile speeds 10 to 20 times faster than previous generations.

The consultation will run for eight weeks and closes on 14 June 2021.
